Goal: Attained

Alumnus Edward Leos continues to impact the lives of many through his writing, his exercise and his caring personality

By Rick Smith ’09, Assistant Director of Alumni Relations

For Edward Leos ’93 BA, an entry-level job after graduation led him down a path to owning a digital magazine now viewed annually by six million people.

Armed with a degree in communication arts from UIW, and experience he gained as editor of UIW’s student newspaper The Logos, he accepted a position as an account executive with The Hotel Guide of San Antonio.

Three years later, the publisher sold Leos the magazine which grew to cover the San Antonio and Austin areas, and now encompasses the entire United States. The Hotel Guide (www.thehotelguide.com) is a specialized publication serving tourists and other travelers looking for expert reviews on hotels and vacation destinations.

Leos credits UIW with helping him to reach his career goals.

“UIW gave me the self-confidence to set goals and go out and attain them,” said Leos. “Everyone [at UIW] was approachable and wanted to help you succeed.”

Another area where Leos has experienced success is health and fitness. As a father of three, he teaches his children about health, fitness and athletics, and has taken that teaching into the San Antonio community. He has almost completed his first cycle of P90X, a 90-day workout program owned by Beach Body and he has recently created a website and published videos of his success on the program at www.built4fitness.com.

“I really believe that everyone is built for fitness. Everyone can make a change to start being healthier,” said Leos.

In addition to completing three half-marathons, he also completed the San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon held last year. He is active with the UIW Alumni Association’s softball team and helps coach his children’s baseball and soccer teams.  Leos hopes to organize a city-wide fitness event in the fall for San Antonio residents of all ages to enjoy.

His family, though, is the pride and joy of his life.  Family is very important to us. My grandparents and parents instilled that in me, and so did my wife’s family,” said Leos. “Having children is one of the greatest gifts I could have ever asked for. It’s a blessing to have an incredible wife and be blessed with phenomenal children. They make me smile every day.”
